But where should you start?  The oval magnet kits are excellent for beginners to learn how to make a mosaic.  The kits come with mosaic tiles in all shapes needed, so there's no tile cutting at all.  Additionally, the magnetic base already has adhesive applied, so there's no glue.  These mosaic kits do not use grout, eliminating that step.  These mosaic magnet kits are mainly about learning to place the mosaic tiles with tweezers, organizing tiles into an image design, and to transfer the mosaic design to a base.

When you feel ready to go to the next level, the round magnet mosaic kits add only the step of cutting tiles.  There are very few cuts, and enough tiles to compensate for tile cutting mistakes.

Next, mosaic coasters introduce two more aspects of the mosaic process:  glue and grout.  The layout of the tiles is easy, following the pattern provided, with ample space between tiles.  When the mosaic tile is transferred to the base, glue is first applied to the base.  Once dry, the grout is mixed and spread across the design, cleaned up, and allowed to dry.

At this point, you have gained experience in each of the fundamental skills needed for the larger kits.  The mosaic art kits are a detailed picture of a scene, animal, plant, etc.  Here there is greater artistic opportunity in selecting which mosaic tile to use, because each tile has slightly different coloring.  There are more cuts, and more tiles overall.  The fundamental mosaic project skills you have learned in the easier kits are reused here, but in greater amounts.
